How to Colour Icing?
Who said icing had to be boring? If you’re planning a themed cake, or simply want to add a splash of colour to your bake, we can show you how to add colour to icing in a few easy steps.
- Once you’ve made up your icing or buttercream frosting, you need to separate it into several bowls. For instance, if you intend to use three different colours, separate your icing into four different bowls. The extra bowl is just in case you add too much colouring and want to soften the colour, or would just like to add plain or white icing to your design.
- Add your colouring. Icing colour is really concentrated, so the important thing to remember is that less is more. Only add a couple of drops to begin with, as you can always add more. If you prefer pastel-like shades, only add a drop or two, if you love bright vibrant colours, you can be a little more generous.
- Use a knife of a toothpick to swirl the drops into your icing in order for the colouring to distribute evenly before mixing vigorously.
- Review your work! If the colour is too pale for you, add a couple more drops, if it is too dark, add some of your spare icing to mute it. That’s it! Now all you have to do is decide on which colour to try first.
